Age, Gender, Geographical Targeting And You
It seems like common sense to state that you’re going to want to specifically target a demographic as it relates to your affiliate marketing campaign(s). But regardless of how common sense it sounds, you’d be surprised at just how many people don’t really think about it and just run ads targeting the default male and females who are 18 years and older. And this is especially so for affiliate marketers new to the industry.
Essentially, you’re going to want to drill it into your head now so that you’ll always automatically check, double-check and even triple-check your ads before submitting them, all just to make sure they’re targeting exactly who you want them to. No matter what particular campaign you’re running, you can ALWAYS narrow down a demographic so that you’re targeting the demo that would most likely A.) Click your advertisement and B.) Actually convert on said advertisement. Of course, this is all dependent upon whatever requirements are given for the sale/lead/conversion.
For instance, take anti-wrinkle creams. It really goes without saying, but would you want to target males at all with such a product? Hopefully you said no to that question… at least if you’re new. There are instances when you may want to try such a radical marketing strategy, but they’re certainly much further down the road of your career than you’re at now.
You’d also want to steer clear of targeting anyone under 30 — or even 35 — because you don’t see a lot of 25 year old women going around worrying about the wrinkles they have on their face, do you? Well, you might if you live in Los Angeles, but NORMAL women in NORMAL cities don’t really experience such problems. No offense gals.
So it might sound really simple and akin to extremely common sense but you can really get into the depths of whatever product or campaign you’re running and narrow it down to a very specific demographic to up your conversion rates. You can also split test a bunch of different demographics to see which gets you a better click through ratio (CTR) and conversion rate. Then you’d be combining two of the most important aspects of Internet Marketing into your campaigns — all rolled up into one. Are you starting to see how all of this fits together yet?
And don’t just leave the testing for your ad copy and photos. You can test different demographic setups as well to see the perfect age range, sex and/or geographical location for your campaigns. Once you get this narrowed down, then you can use the information to have more successful conversions and more impressive and profitable overall ROI. Not to mention better click thru ratios — all of which go hand-in-hand with affiliate marketing success.
